Joan Bowen Cafe

 |

I've always admired organizations and businesses who help society by either employing ex-offenders, senior citizens, or even those who special needs. It's not an easy feat, and it takes a lot of courage and trust. Especially for organizations and businesses who employ and train those with special needs, much patience is probably needed as well.

So when I first heard about Joan Bowen Cafe on television some time ago, I thought "Oh great! Kudos to the owner / founder of this establishment for training those with special needs, providing them an opportunity to pickup a range of skills and providing an environment for them to hone these skills and contribute to society."

Today, I stumbled upon Joan Bowen Cafe while eating at the coffeeshop beside. Immediately, the short snippet of Joan Bowen Cafe being featured on television came to my mind, and I decided to give it a try.

When my friends arrived, their friendly staff greeted us at the door and asked if we made reservations. Despite saying no, we managed to get ourselves 3 outdoor seats, which were not too bad because it was we were still in the shade.

We quickly made our orders - a Normal Coffee, a Latte (if I remember correctly), a Walnut Cake, an Apple Crumble with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream.

Coffee and cake - perfect way to enjoy an afternoon of great company.

The Apple Crumble with scoop of Ice Cream that my friend ordered.
Am not a fan of Apple Crumble, so I can't say much though.

Shortly after our orders arrived, more people arrived and I understood why they asked if we made reservations early. Because as the lunch hour approached, the cafe began to buzz with activity, as patrons from nearby offices started entering the premise to have lunch. Some even arrived in taxis, so I reckon that they do not work nearby.

Glancing at the food that was served to other tables, as well as the crowd that had built up in the last hour or so, I figured that perhaps, this place serves really good food.

Well, I'll probably come back to give their food a try. But till then, I shall relish in the bittersweet taste from my cup of coffee at Joan Bowen Cafe.
